Accepting Responsibility

We all make mistakes. Taking responsibility for our missteps is difficult but is always needed. Resolution, course correction and healing can only begin once we acknowledge our responsibility in the mistake and take sincere ownership of our own actions. Then strive to learn from the mistakes and not repeat them.

Here are some steps to consider when taking responsibility after a misstep.

  1. Acknowledge that you made a mistake and apologize verbally taking responsibility without blame or excuses or changing the topic. Take ownership.

  2. Be sincere and show true regret for your action. Acknowledge and reflect how it negatively impacted others.

  3. Create an immediate plan for resolving the mistake. Breaking what is needed down into small steps and involving others in the solution as needed.

  4. Take action. Put your plan for resolution into play. Try not to repeat the same mistake again.
